Why Finding a Job Doesn’t Have to Be Like an Easter Egg Hunt

Job searches are never fun. They take a lot of work and a lot of emotional energy as well. There is always rejection to deal with. You want to make your job search as efficient and effective as possible. You don’t want to feel like a pinball bouncing around aimlessly. Here are some ideas to get your job search together and make it a good one.

Set goals.

Decide what you want to accomplish with your job search. Be specific about it; write down your goals so you know exactly what you need to do. Then set up some benchmarks; some smaller, interim goals. For example, how many companies do you want to research each week? How many people do you want to contact each week? How many resumes do you want to send out?

Prioritize.

Your goals should help you decide which tasks are the most important and need to receive most of your attention and energy. Make sure you prioritize the tasks on your to-do list.

Organize.

This means blocking out a chunk of time during the day to focus exclusively on the job search. That means avoiding email, surfing the web, talking with friends, running errands or any other distractions.

If you are working from home, create a workspace for yourself where you will conduct your job search. Gather everything you will need; any files, storage units or writing instruments. Create a separate file system in your computer that will be devoted just to the job search.

Come up with a daily schedule, and write it down.

Each day you need to decide what you are going to do, when you are going to do it and how much time you are going to need. Make sure you write down what you have accomplished each day so you stay organized. This is also important because it will help you see how your search is progressing and whether you need to make changes in what you are doing.

Use online help.

As is well known, there are tons of sites online to help you get organized and conduct your job search – sites that aggregate job boards, even sites that help you set up interviews. Use them.
