How to Quit Your Job – the Right Way

Leaving a job is usually not the most pleasant of experiences. Your supervisor will probably be stressed because they have to replace you and will be shorthanded until they do. You will be leaving colleagues whom you have come to like and respect.

One of the most common reasons people leave their jobs is because of conflict with their supervisor. If that is the case, make sure you have done everything you could to resolve these issues before you take the big step of quitting.

When leaving, it is important to exit on good terms with everyone. Here are some tips on how to quit the right way.

Remain polite.

Resist the urge to vent about your frustrations with the job or tell your supervisor what you really think about them. Doing this may make you feel good for a short time, but that is all it will accomplish.

You want to leave on good terms with everyone. Don’t destroy any relationships because you may need them later. The same is true if you are asked to do an exit interview. Do the interview, explaining why you are leaving, and what you expect in your new job.

Your letter of resignation should be succinct.

Emphasize what you liked about the job and the things that went well. Thank your supervisor for the opportunity to work at the company.

Do it face to face.

Tell your supervisor in person that you are going to resign before you submit your letter of resignation. Do not use email to inform your supervisor you are leaving. The professional thing to do is to tell him face to face.

Prepare for your leaving.

Make a list of the things you need to do before you go; things like cleaning out your files, tying up any work assignments and checking in with human resources.

Do a good job.

Make sure your performance doesn’t dip before you leave. It may be hard to focus when your mind is looking toward the future, but you need to stay professional and continue to do a good job. Your supervisor and fellow employees will appreciate it.
