Where do you want your career to go? Now is the time to give it some thought. Set clear and definite goals to give you direction and motivation. Often, if we have goals at all, they are rather nebulous. We haven’t given a lot of thought to what they are or how to get there. Here are a few tips on how to correct that problem.

Do some brainstorming.

Think about all the things you want to accomplish this year. Don’t censor yourself. Give your mind free rein and let yourself go. If it comes into your head, write it down.

Examine your goals.

Take each goal, one by one, and think about your reasons for setting it. Work back several steps on why you want this goal. For example, one goal you may have is making more money. Why do you want to make more money? Maybe you want to buy a house. Then ask, why do you want a house? This will help you uncover your true objectives.

Firm up your goals.

To be effective, goals need to be SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. A good goal is one you can begin to work toward today. It needs to be clearly defined. Making more money is not an effective goal. How much more money, and do you think the amount is achievable? Do you think it is something you will be able to accomplish this year?

Trim your goals.

So, you now have a list of goals. The next step is to determine one or two that are most important, so you can focus your energy on them. Ask yourself, if you could achieve only half of your goals, which ones would they be? Then repeat the process of halving goals until you have only one or two remaining.

Develop a plan for achieving your goal.

Break your goal down into more manageable parts. Develop a plan of action, steps you can take toward achieving your goal, and a timeline for accomplishing each step.
