Underwriting Assistant

Do you have experience in the commercial insurance industry and looking for a temporary opportunity to get your foot in the door with a great company? We have the position for you.  As an Underwriting Assistant you are responsible for assisting the Underwriting department with a special project to serve the organizations policyholders.  This means we need a detail oriented, dependable, self-starter with the ability to effectively and confidently ask questions when there are issues or discrepancies along with the ability to speak professionally with clients when needed.

Responsibilities & Key Objectives:

  • Review documents in a timely manner for important details pertaining to underwriting guidelines
  • Promote good customer relations through direct and indirect contact with all in-state and out of state brokers
  • Respond to Department inquiries via telephone and email
  • Verify and produce critical information for file documentation (dates, premium, policy numbers, claims reports, applicable forms, subject to items, etc.)
  • Communicate with Underwriting staff on eligibility
  • Approve/decline limit changes for all lines of coverage
  • Gather information needed for discount requests for all lines of coverage
  • Loss run reporting and third party requests for information
  • Maintain communication with Underwriter staff on change requests outside of individual authority and secure Underwriter direction as needed
  • Assist in preliminary research on projects, new programs and coverages
  • Complete department specific reports, counts or projects
  • Assist Data Entry on an as-needed basis

Required Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1+ years’ experience working in the insurance industry, preferably in the service and/or clerical area
  • Property and Casualty License preferred
  • Computer skills required
  • Knowledge of insurance terminology and concepts is desirable
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Prioritize workload to meet all deadlines
  • Must possess strong organization and analytical skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment
  • Requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
